Music, the universal language. What our you guys listening to while writing? Or what our you jamming out to while procrastinating from writing? As motivating as music can be I won`t deny being sucked into just jamming.
AJR is honestly a favorite modern band of mine and there Neotheater album has a lot of just objectively good songs in it but also a lot that`s relative to creatives. I keep repeating this song as it really captures putting you`rself out there as an artist ...or just a person in general.
I don't listen to music while writing because it distracts me too much. On the rare occasion that I do though, it's got to be mostly instrumental. Movie soundtracks are good - I like the LOTR and Oblivion soundtracks, and since Arrival is a favourite movie of mine I recently checked out its soundtrack too, which is certainly different, but interesting.

I listen to all sorts of things when writing. Sometimes the music gets associated with the story because I was listening to it while writing. Other times pre-writing the music reminded me of the story so I played it.

I tailor playlists to stories. Epic fantasy, for example, tends to include a lot of symphonic metal, while urban includes more hard rock, and for something like horror or scifi I often put on environmental playlists. But I may also include songs that are thematically appropriate, or hit some sweet spot for character relationships.
