it's time for wriye 2021! if you're new here, or returning and would like a refresher, make sure to check out the wriye 2021 information post to get started!
we are very happy you are here and can't wait to write (and edit!) words with you in 2021.
hello, and welcome to wriye: the year-long writing community born out of a dual love of writing lots of words and organized challenges. if you are planning on writing -- or editing -- at all this year, we'd love for you to join our community! there's no goal too large or too small; we believe that all words are good words here and will always encourage everyone, no matter their goal. if you're looking for a group of writers to support you along your own writing-journey, this is the place for you.
hi, i'm mel! this is my .. 12th? year of doing wriye, if you count all the years i didn't really participate. which i will, because why not? last year (pretend i'm writing this in 2021) was the first time i ever actually reached my goal however, which is a huge win for me. over 300,000 words! in one year! so i'm going to try and do it again.
IRL i am a graphic designer and if you live in washington or alaska, i make some of the junk mail and trash you see in one of your local grocery stores. fun fact - i made some signs that are in some super remote alaskan grocery store, way at the tippy top of the state. (look up barrow, ak on google maps. it's crazy yet beautiful and now complete with mel originals™)
i write (obviously) primarily fantasy and space opera. i have a habit of never finishing things and abandoning them (crystal souls and crumbly bits) but one of my goals this year is to start tackling the editing beast by reworking, rewriting and then editing a story i wrote in 2020. i also play far too many video games, generally of the RPG variety and sometimes write fluffy mass effect fanfiction that no one on this earth will ever see except for me.
• write 300,000 words • rewrite and potentially begin edits on mechs • read 50 books
so, it's finally 2021! i'm excited to start a new year, though i'm still cautiously optimistic how much better it will be. maybe later on things will improve for everyone but until then, i am embracing my inner hermit and just staying home. which gives me time for .. writing and art. ;]
don't ask me how long it took to spell 'perseverance' correctly. i still rely on my laptop's autocorrect function tbh. if it's still wrong, blame apple. it's my theme for the year - to just keep going, keep writing and work on all those various things i want to accomplish. i've noticed that i've gotten better over the past year and so, want to continue to improve. that almost sounds inspiring, doesn't it? ;p
i'm taking writing easy for the month - keeping a low word count, though i hope i can easily get 10k. my true goal is to stop cheating at 4tw, write at least a little every day and keep working on my various projects. if i don't get all the RaTs prompts into the generator, feel free to kick me.

Good luck with everything! Perseverance definitely is the key. I know from discord you are already smashing your goal of the RaT's generator and your sketches have been amazing on sketch a day. Go you!

Thanks everyone! Compliments fuel my work, I won't lie, lol. Right now, I'm working on adding in toppings so you can either get a random one, or pick your own.
So apparently, I greatly underestimated my word count goals for the month. Unfortunately, none of it (save like 800 words) is original fiction, just a very long, rambly fanfiction story. But! I don't care too much, because it's getting me to write and all words are good.
Art goals have been meh so far, with only drawing a few of the prompts. My seal is my favorite. I feel like I may have better luck just picking a subject and drawing from there, because the randomness makes me think too much. ;p
monthly writing goals
• write 10,000 words (21,715 / 10,000) • write 30,000 words (21,715 / 30,000) • 4tw streak (377 days)
• finish RaTs Generator • read at least one book • sketch a day (2 / 31)
wardenred Greedfall! It's a fantasy RPG around colonialism (which sounds.. bad and admittedly I tried to help the native people as much as I could lol) but it has some really interesting characters, but not a lot of interactions between them, and so that's mostly what I've been writing.
January is going.. surprisingly well? I couldn't really tell you how, but I guess it's a cross between things being slow at work and me writing a combination of fanfic and restarting Mechs. The latter is going well, and it's pretty much entirely different. Oops. The important things are still the same, though. It just has .. more plot? now, which is probably a good thing.
Next week will be interesting - I have to start going back into the office two days a week (I've ranted about this extensively on discord lol) for no good reason, so that may cut into my writing time a bit. Or maybe I'll write more, because it's easy to pretend I'm doing work. ;]
monthly writing goals
• write 10,000 words (21,715 / 10,000) • write 30,000 words (32,338 / 30,000) • write ??? words (32,338) • 4tw streak (383 days)
• finish RaTs Generator • read at least one book 2! • sketch a day (3 / 31) • no murdering
That's awesome that you accomplished both your word count goals this month. The plot of your book sounds very interesting as well. I've never heard of a fantasy novel set in the colonial era. I'm also glad you haven't murdered anyone (yet). LOL! Keep up the good work!
