untitled fae novel
I won't post a blurb here because I haven't written a new one since I reworked the plot/outline recently, but in brief this is a fantasy novel featuring a female main character named Tanith, who is one of the fae and also a 'sage' (read: magic user and advisor) to the court of her realm. Irithae, the previous sage (and Tanith's former mentor), turned against the court because she believed the hereditary monarchy should be abolished in favour of those who are wiser and more skilled, and as a result she has been barred from the realm and is trying to get back in and take over. Tanith is living in the human realm in order to uphold the barrier against Irithae. The novel is basically about Irithae weakening the barrier and eventually breaking through and Tanith trying to fix it while dealing with a lot of conflicted feelings as well as a new human friend/love interest.
Once again I'm only going to be counting the words for a single project this year. While technically I have the whole year to reach 80k, hopefully I'll get there well before then. I'm not going to set daily or weekly word count goals per se, but I do need to get back into the habit of writing regularly. I do also have to balance work and uni and my meagre social life.
Although I generally prefer the ease of writing in Microsoft Word, for this project I'm going back to Scrivener because I'm going to try writing out of order slightly i.e. starting in the middle or at the climax and writing towards the end, then writing from the beginning to the middle. So I need my chapters as separate documents to do that easily. I often have trouble thinking of endings and leave those details until I actually write them, which never works, so this time I made sure I actually knew what my ending would be.
I've already done a chapter outline (after a lot of brainstorming, then reworking my original plot and outline, and a bit more brainstorming) and am going to start doing some 'character studies', which are basically going to be short snippets written in the POV of each main character or containing a scene between the characters so that I can get better capture my and their voice - another thing I have trouble with. This voice issue is another reason I'm going to start writing in the middle, because I'm hoping being in media res will kickstart everything for my brain.
Since I'm doing a few things differently than how I usually would, this will be an interesting experiment. Hopefully it'll work out and give me a better first draft that I can actually move forward with.
