In order to be fair to everyone, WriYe does have some limitations on what can be counted towards your word count goal. This post outlines the basics of the types of creative works you can / cannot count in WriYe 2024.
Allowed:
-- Short stories / "one-shots"
-- Fictional Novels of all genres [including fan fiction]
-- Creative Non-Fiction
-- Non-fiction [articles, memoirs, biographies, reviews, etc.]
-- Novelizations of past role-playing plots / stories
-- Poetry / Lyrics
-- Outlines, Character Sketches, Summaries, and all other forms of Planning
Up to the Writer's Discretion:
-- Rewrites [if you are doing a substantial rewrite and typing everything from scratch, these words count; if you're going through and making minimal changes [ie: said to declared] this does not count.]
-- Schoolwork [papers and the like definitely count but, with subjects such as math, you should be careful that you're only counting the wordy bits and not just number-crunching]
-- Scripts / Screenplays [again, up to the discretion of the author. If you are primarily a screenwriter we don't want to discourage you, but there is a lot of repetition with settings and names in scripts. If you would like to count these words, however, you may]
Not Allowed:
-- Sections of co-written works that your partner wrote [your sections are allowed to be a part of your word count, however]
-- Actual role playing
-- Already copyrighted material [ie - if writing a song fic and the song lyrics are included in the fic, those lyrics cannot be counted unless they are your own. Also note that when answering questions for schoolwork, if you are copying definitions / answers directly from a textbook, these words do not count for WriYe either.]
-- Blog / Journal Posts [unless it is for a fictional character]
-- Letters [also unless written by a fictional character]
-- HTML / CSS / Java / Any other type of computer coding
If there are any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Even if you just need clarification, ask us! We're here to answer your questions.
